4 Tips to Reduce Stress During a Divorce

Divorce is never easy. Even when both partners agree it's the right choice, the process can feel overwhelming—emotionally, financially, and mentally. While there's no way to take all the stress away, there are practical steps you can take to make things a little easier on yourself.

Here are four tips to help you navigate this difficult time with less stress:

1. Focus on What You Can Control

It's natural to feel anxious or even fearful about things outside your control—like how your spouse may act or how long the court process might take. Instead, try to shift your focus to the areas where you do have control:

  • Preparing the documents your lawyer needs
  • Keeping track of important deadlines
  • Taking care of your daily routines

This not only reduces stress but also helps you feel more grounded.

2. Don't let fear override good judgment.

Fear can drive irrational thoughts and sabotage your case.

  • Don't engage with your spouse if you are angry. This is self-sabotage and may give them exactly what they want.
  • If your spouse is aggressive or threatening, seek help immediately and leave the situation.
  • Avoid believing the internet stories. Many are click bait and designed to induce fear. They have little to do with current Oregon law or how divorce works in Oregon.

Laws in Oregon regarding divorce are based on what is just and equitable (fair). Despite stories on the internet, no one walks away with everything. If you have concerns, please talk to your attorney rather than letting fear get the best of you and ruin your case.

3. Build/Use a Support System

Divorce can feel isolating, but you don't have to go through it alone. Reach out to trusted friends or family members, or consider joining a support group where you can connect with people who understand what you're going through.

For many, talking with a therapist or counselor provides a safe space to process emotions. Having the right support makes it easier to stay resilient during the ups and downs of the process.

4. Take Care of Your Well-Being

It might sound simple, but taking care of yourself goes a long way during stressful times. Small habits like:

  • Getting enough sleep
  • Eating balanced meals
  • Taking walks or doing light exercise
  • Practicing mindfulness or journaling

These steps can help clear your mind and reduce feelings of being overwhelmed. Think of it as building strength for both your present and your future.

Divorce is a major life transition, and it's completely normal to feel stressed or fearful. But with the right mindset, support, and self-care, you can make it through with more clarity and less strain. And remember—you don't have to handle the legal side of things alone. Having an experienced family lawyer by your side can take a huge weight off your shoulders, allowing you to focus on healing and moving forward.  Feel free to use this checklist to help.
